In the 1980s, I edited a fanzine called TIMBRE, where I cut my teeth on a variety of articles and parodies. Since then, I've written articles for a variety of publications, including Wellington's Dominion Post newspaper. This page provides access to my non-fiction pieces available online. They're roughly in reverse chronological order.

  • My article The Future of Oil appeared in the DominionPost on 2 November 2007. This copy of it is archived at the Be The Change climate change action site.
  • My essay On Identity first appeared in the programme for Super Vision, a show in the 2006 New Zealand International Festival of the Arts in Wellington. What with the recent police anti-terrorism raids in New Zealand, which swept up a wide range of political activists, it has become more relevant in the interim, so I reproduced it in my writing blog, Books in the Trees.
  • The seed of Returning was a fanzine article called "Sunset", published in Lilian Edwards' and Christina Lake's fanzine This Never Happens, but it's been rewritten and expanded since then. It's now available from Spiny Babbler.
  • Wild America, a piece about how America and I got on when I visited there in 1993, was first published in TIMBRE.
  • The first issue of TIMBRE, published in 1983, was graced (?!) by The Lost Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbelievable.
