When I was growing up I was embarrassed by my surname. It was too long, you had to spell it to everyone, it often got a surprised look and raised eyebrows, many jokes and nicknames were thrown at you. All Murgatroyds will have had that experience and I imagine many have grown up with an apologetic attitude to the name. Well, it is colourful, has an interesting history and the early family were important and wealthy people in their area. A name to be proud of (except for the Riddlesden mob)

As T.W.Hanson said in his book "Ovendon Wood":-
It is a fine name is Murgatroyd, it has a twang of the peat about it and it is the most descriptive of our local surnames.

In later years I got interested in the name and did a lot of research into it's origins and members. As a result I met Bill Murgatroyd, who had done similar research and his results are largely the content of the Murgatroyd section of this site.

Please use the Information needed and Feedback areas of this page to advise others of what you are doing and help needed...send me an e-mail.

In my searching I have compiled a large database of Murgatroyd groups in the Yorkshire area. Over 3000 records of births, marriages and deaths have been collated into probable family groups and these are on a searchable database. Unfortunately only a 10 to 20 percent of Murg's got into the parish records in the Yorkshire area however if you are doing research and would like some help send me an e-mail.

Feedback from others

I have heard from many other Murgs who have visited the site...some had an idea of their genealogy back more than 3 or 4 generations, others had not. Seems we are a fairly lone bunch. I have replied to all emails and would be delighted to hear more from some of you.

I have also had some interesting enquiries from SPOOM (Soc. for Preservation of old mills) who may be doing a little research on the Warley Mills that were so long in the family. Check on http://www.spoom.org for more info

Information needed or family research being done

In the Morley area (Independant Church) nr. Leeds, prior to 1735 birth of a Mattathius (Mathew) Murgatroyd, possibly to a father John who was active in the non-conformist churches of the area.......contact Rod Murgatroyd...webmaster.

Bob Murgittroyd of New Jersey would like to hear from Murgitt---- members. He has a tree for his family in the USA and thinks they arrived about 1700's...He needs to find where from

John C Murgatroyd of Burnley has also indicated he has research notes and is willing to investigate for others.

Clive Murgatroyd needs help with family in the Haworth area who shifted to East Lancashire about 1812.
