Dreamers Read
Chapters 1 & 2
This book is a rearrangement of Mills and Boon mythology.
It was 1989 in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand . In Tonks Avenue, in the centre of town, the cottages were in disrepair awaiting demolition to make way for a motorway. In one of these cottages, taking advantage of cheap rent, lived Thomas Young-Felo. Thomas was the middle-aged proprietor of a second hand bookshop. He had had a sad life. In his youth he had won a scholarship to Oxford University . However he made a bad marriage, abandoned his wife, his studies, his beloved daughter and lived thereafter in the shadow of regret.
Katherine de Bris was a bright young teacher of
English in a secondary school. As a child she had been abandoned by her father,
who sailed away from her and her mother over the dark sea. No relationship she
had ever seemed to last. All the partners she had would leave her with hardly
an explanation.
One day Kate came into Thomas’s bookshop looking for an old volume to prop up the leg of a table in a school play. There was an instant recognition, a flow of energy between them. But would they ever get together to form a relationship? Was she looking for a father? Was he looking for a daughter? Would they become lovers, or just friends, or would they come together only in the world of dreams?
